Help fight world hunger!

April 12, 2007
GREEN HOPE HIGH PRESENTS ITS FIRST
"EMPTY BOWLS" DINNER
ON BEHALF OF HEIFER INTERNATIONAL

Thursday, April 12, 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the Commons Area

To help fight world hunger, the Arts departments sponsored a charity dinner on April 12 from 6:30-9:30 pm in Green Hope's Commons Area. For $15.00 per person each attendee chose a bowl painted by GH faculty or student body, enjoyed a soup dinner and made a charitable donation to the Heifer International organization (tax deductible). The Orchestra Quartet performed at the opening and during dinner. Mary Foster, from the local chapter of Heifer Organization, spoke about the work that Heifer does in providing animals to families in need around the world and how it has touched her life. In addition, a Silent Art Auction of local artists that have donated works was held to increase the donation amount. The Chorus sang after dinner and bids from the Art Auction were announced.

Thanks to Melissa Poppe for instituting this worthwhile event at Green Hope! Ms. Poppe reports that our first "Empty Bowls" dinner raised nearly $4200 -- enough to buy

  • 1 Joy to the World (2 sheep, 4 goats, 1 heifer, 2 llamas)
  • 2 Promise Baskets (geese, ducks, chickens, rabbits)
  • 3 Heifers
  • 1 Water buffalo
  • 2 Honey bees
  • 1 Pig
  • 10 Tree seedlings
Thank you for your participation -- to all the parents who contributed food, etc., and to all the attendees!

For the past 60 years, Heifer International (www.heifer.org) has worked to end hunger and poverty, and care for the earth by providing appropriate livestock, training and related services to small-scale farmers and communities worldwide. Heifer cares for the earth's natural resources through training in livestock management, pasture improvement, soil conservation, forestation and recast. Their cornerstone of "passing on the gift," assures that each participant in the program becomes a donor and gives the animal's offspring to another family in need. This concept helps build community and enhances dignity and participation in each project. The families continually give to others ensuring self-sufficiency, one family at a time. Heifer had 726 active projects in 57 countries and 29 states in FY2006.
